Deep beneath the Limburg landscape, hidden under the hills of Valkenburg, lies a place where time seems to sleep and Christmas comes to life anew each year: the Velvet Cave.

Long before lights twinkled and Christmas carols echoed through its passages, this underground world was hand-carved from marlstone. Stone by stone, a labyrinth of corridors emerged, once intended to build houses and the mighty Valkenburg Castle Ruins. But soon, the cave became more than just a quarry. In times of danger, it became a hidden refuge, where people quietly concealed themselves while the world above was in turmoil.

And then something special happened. In later centuries, the dark, rough passages were transformed into something almost magical. Walls were adorned, light and shadow played with each other, and the atmosphere became softer, warmer — as if the cave itself had donned a velvet cloak. Thus, it received its name: Fluweelengrot, the Velvet Cave that whispers its secrets in ochre yellow and soft marlstone.

Today, it is no longer a hidden refuge, but an underground Christmas world where magic comes to life. Lights reflect in the marl walls like stars in a winter sky, stalls fill the passages with the scent of warmth and sweetness, and every step feels like walking through a living fairy tale.
